A Higher Call

Chivalry and Humanity Against a Backdrop of Total War

This model is in 1/32 scale and depicts Franz Stiegler intercepting the heavily damaged B17f ‘Ye Olde Pub’ in his Bf109-G6. The B17f was returning from a bombing run over Bremen in 1943, having sustained considerable damage the crew, led by 2nd Lt. Charlie Brown were nursing the aircraft back to their base when they were intercepted by Franz Stiegler of JG27. Seeing the plight of the bomber he took pity on them and escorted them through formidable flak batteries eventually waving them on their way over the North Sea. The two pilots were reunited 1986.

It is a powerful story of chivalry in conflict and humanity even in the face of total war. The entire incident is masterfully covered in Adam Makos’s book ‘A Higher Call’.
